Habitat for Humanity

Each year the Episcopal churches in the Valley have been able to build two new homes, and change the lives of two families in Arizona.  Newspaper money, Just Coffee money, and special Sunday collections during the year are contributed to this group.  Also, people can give directly to Episcopal Habitat for Humanity for a tax-free donation.  Generally our Church helps four to six Saturdays each year in the actual building of the Episcopal houses.  All you need is a hat to wear, and be able to be at the church at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning.  Work, fun, and lots of laughter are guaranteed.  Open to all!  Contact: Sandy Basche DanB@stjohnsaz.org

Highway Clean-Up

St. Johns adopted a 1 mile stretch of highway about 10 years ago on the Carefree Highway (about 10-12 miles away). Everyone 13 years or above is invited and even encouraged to come and participate. Each year we plan at least 2 clean-ups- in early March and early Nov. Sometimes more are needed, but we would let you know when. Many of us enjoy eating at the Place (51st Ave. and Bell Rd.) first, and then after swinging by church to carpool to the site we share the comraderie on the drive as well as for the 2 hrs. or so it takes to clean-up. Bright vests, cold water, pick up tools, and often snacks are provided. It is best to wear sturdy shoes or boots, pants (jeans are best!), gloves, and a hat. Please join us in fall for the fun, plus our church's name is on the sign for this stretch of road, so it encourges us to keep it clean. Talk to Dan B. or Mike Werner if you want to know more about this.

Chris Becker Soup Kitchen

The people of St. Johns did a great job again this winter! We did well in providing for the homeless and very poor of north-central Phx. The food and our chocolate milk got served, along with the many clothes, shoes, blankets, toiletries, new socks (this may be what they are most appreciative of),tooth brushes, and a large number of other donations! We can always use new servers. Likewise we need money to buy socks, milk, blankets, and other necessities for survival. Save and bring us any clothes from baby thru adult-warm weather things now, and cold weather things startinging Nov. Also in winter bring in things saved such as: blankets, gloves, scarves, jackets sweaters, sweatshirts, sleeping bags, and other cold weather things. Our next 2 visits will be on Tues. May 13th and Sun. June 1st. Share any ideas or questions with Dan Basche. Again thank you for your incredible support and love. They always suppose that we must be a mega-church, as we provide so much. You only need a smile and willingness to join this group. For God's glory! Contact: Dan Basche DanB@stjohnsaz.org

Cursillo News!

After a 10 year hiatus Cursillo is active and growing. In the last 2 weeks there has been both a Men's and Womens weekend here in the valley. There were 8 men and 22 women candidates going through. The Holy Spirit was very active and powerful at both weekends! The candidates are now truly on fire to get to know, love, and serve our great Lord better! Jim Rosen was St. Johns only candidate this time and believe me that he has returned to us with a burning desire to love and serve Christ! St. Johns had many team members serving our Lord: Fr. Harry, Dan Basche, Scott Sipes, Kurt and Susan Gruenberg, George Santa Maria, and Philip McKindley. The reunion Ultreya will be on May 10th at noon at St. Stephen's. Our next Cursillos should be next February so if want to know more about it talk to one of these people or any of the other cursillistas in the parish.
